Cell Phone Ringtones

There are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of cell phone ringtones available on the Internet for downloading free. These come in a variety of formats such as MP3, MIDI, WAV, or MMF. These could be musical pieces of every imaginable genre. You can have jazz, reggae, hip-hop, rock, blues, rap, country, classics, pop, or any other type. The ringtones can also be any kind of sound such as a croaking frog, machine gun fire, animal sounds, heartbeats, or even rushing water. Any kind of sound will qualify as a ringtone even if it is not really a ring.

There are three types of ringtones, monophonic, polyphonic, and truetones. A monophonic ringtone is a succession of musical notes, played one at a time. Older cell phones used this type. Newer models, however, are capable of playing polyphonic ringtones. These types can play several notes at a given time, and can specify the synthetic instrument that should play. Truetones are audio recordings of anything audible. These days, most cell phone ringtones consist of truetones. They are sometimes called mastertones, superphonic ringtones, or realtones.

Some cell phones allow users to assign a specific ringtone to each of their contacts. Thus, you can use a clap of thunder for your boss, or perhaps a favorite love song for your significant other.
